Get Dressed in Four Quick Steps

A lot of women get overwhelmed with the process of getting dressed and part of the reason is because their closet has no sense of structure, they lack the wardrobe essentials or haven’t identified their personal style yet. But if you’ve been following my posts then by now you should have a sense clarity in each of these areas and getting dressed should be much more exciting and less of an overwhelm.

If you haven’t read the previous posts then I recommend you go back, read and implement those strategies right away. It'll help you tremendously as it relates to getting dressed and look put together every single day! Once you’re done come back and finish this post because I’m about to make getting dressed even easier for you!

After all the closet cleansing, organizing and style discovery, here’s where it all comes together....

In the next few lines I’m going to share the simple yet effective formula I use to put different looks together with items every woman should already own. Let’s get started!

Step 1: Set the Tone

Choose a piece that has something special or unique as the focal point of your outfit, maybe it’s a patterned blazer, a fabulous pair of shoes or a vibrant dress. Whatever strikes at you first sight- grab it. This will be the statement piece that’ll set the tone for everything else. Have fun, be bold and explore your options.

Step 2: Compile the Basics

Think of basics as supporting pieces. This can be anything from jeans, to a white tee, black dress or slacks. Whatever it may be, pick the basics that will support the statement piece. For example if you chose a hot pink blazer as the statement piece, then the basics would be a pair of black jeans or a dress even a white and black, striped tee. Yes basics can have patterns too - mostly with classic patterns in neutral colors like, polka dots or stripes.

Step 3: Layer, layer, layer

Next, add layering pieces to make the overall look more interesting. This could be a jacket, a vest, scarf, cardigan and the list goes get the idea. Now, if you chose a layering piece with a pattern the rule of thumb is to follow a similar color scheme from the statement piece.

Step 4: Accessorize

Accessories can be anything from shoes, belts, handbags, necklaces, rings, earrings and so forth - basically anything that further elevates your desired look. An outfit without accessories is like a cake with no icing. So please accessorize even if it’s just a pair of diamond studs - it really does make you look 10 x more polished and style forward. Trust me.

So that’s it! If you follow these steps you will have a fabulous new look every time. Pretty simple, right?

Now, one more thing, recently I discovered getting dressed (for me) can go any of these two ways..

On a good day, I can immediately grab something that demands my attention, quickly pair with some basics, throw on some heels and be on my merry way....other days however, I can be left staring at my closet for a good five minutes (yes this happens to me too) mostly on days when I'm tired, overwhelmed and uninspired.

So here's what I do instead: I start with the basics!

Starting with the basics is like starting with a blank canvas, everything will come together once you put brush to paint.

So there you have it. The Next time you find yourself stuck, unsure of what to wear follow these four easy steps to get you started with creating your own outfits, so you can get dressed more quickly and avoid the overwhelm.
